Szawlowski Farms Agricultural Foundation Student Scholarships Announced
In conjunction with their One Hundred Year Anniversary, Szawlowski Potato Farms, Inc. announces the creation of the “Szawlowski Farms Agricultural Foundation”.
Hatfield, Massachusetts, June 30, 2010—Szawlowski Potato Farms, Inc., the largest Potato Farm in New England, has announced the creation of the “Szawlowski Farms Agricultural Foundation”. This non-profit organization will provide educational scholarships and other financial aid to people and groups in the Connecticut River Valley Region of Massachusetts, whose goal it is to further the practice of farming and to preserve agriculture in this geographic area.
Szawlowski Potato Farms, Inc., a family owned and operated potato farm, is celebrating its One Hundred Year Anniversary in July. The farm was started in Northampton, Massachusetts in 1910. In that year, John R. Szawlowski, a polish immigrant, began growing potatoes along the fertile banks of the Connecticut River. Five generations later, it has evolved into a large shipping and packing operation as well. The Szawlowski’s grow 2,500 acres of their own potatoes and pack and ship varieties from across the country year-round. They employ approximately 50 full time workers and dozens more seasonal workers.
The family decided to create the foundation in conjunction with their Centennial Celebration, to help ensure that agriculture remains vital and good stewardship of the land continues to be a priority in the years to come.
